A few weeks ago I wanted to dye my hair red; unfortunately, I have naturally dark hair. In order to do this I had to first bleach my hair, so I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and got enough bleach and developer to bleach twice and then the dye plus a 20 volume developer for the color. Specifically I used this bleach

Once I got home I mixed one bleach packet with one bottle of 40 volume developer in a plastic bowl. Using a hair dye brush (see here: http://www.amazon.com/Hair-Color-Tint-Dye-Brush/dp/B0002Z914O) I parted my hair in the middle and applied the bleach to the hair starting at the root and kept parting and applying towards the side of the head. After the roots on both sides and in the back were covered with hair bleach I scooped up the rest of the dye from the bowl and rubbed it onto the rest of the hair (with gloves on). After all the bleach was applied I let it sit for 40 minutes and then rinsed the hair in the tub. After all the bleach was rinsed I conditioned my hair with this: http://www.sallybeauty.com/hair-repair-therapy/ION22,default,pd.html?cgid=Hair03-06 When I was done rinsing out the conditioner, I dried my hair and reapplied the bleach with the second bottle of developer and the next pack of bleach, waited another half hour, rinsed, and conditioned.

After the hair dried from the second treatment, I mixed the red hair dye and the 20 volume developer and applied it to my hair in the same way I applied the bleach. Once the dye was applied to all the hair, I waited 20 minutes and then rinsed all the dye off the hair and used ANOTHER packet of the conditioner.

If you do this process make sure you rinse the hair in the tub so that the red dye doesn't turn your skin red. Also, use a towel you don't care about to dry the hair as some the color will come off onto the towel.

Once you have rinsed and dried the hair, you have a very bright RED head of hair. :D
